Conservation Framing Terminology:

Artboard (matting)

Matting is the colored paperboard material that is used to create a transition
from the picture to the frame. Ordinary matboard is pulp based and contains
acids and lignins that over time damage the artwork they come into contact
with. Artworld of Sherway offers only conservation quality artboards from
Artique, Bainbridge and Crescent - which are free of all acids, lignins and other
impurities. Within our conservation artboard selection we offer 100% cotton
rag paper matts that offer a smooth finish or a subtle canvas-like texture and
fabric mats which include a variety of fabric textures, colours and styles,
including: suede, linen, silk, grasscloth, denim and metallic.

Glass

All works of art on paper must be protected by UV Protection glass or from
a sheet of UV Protection transparent acrylic material. Ultraviolet rays are one
of the most dangerous elements that your artwork can encounter. It will not
only cause the colour of your artwork to fade to a mere shadow, but it will
cause the materials themselves to begin to break down right in the frame.
Conservation quality glass offers 97% filtering protection from these damaging
rays. Conservation glass is Artworld of Sherway's standard glass. Also available
upon request in the conservation series are a variety of anti-reflective finishes
including Non-Glare and Anti-Reflective Museum Glass.

Even though glass does not contain acid and hence will not damage paper,
different temperatures between the inside and the outside of the frame, can.
Often the condensation can build up, causing the piece touching the glass
to stick, causing damage or the growth of mould and bacterial parasites to
form, also causing damage to the piece - therefore it is vital that a space be
left between the glass and the picture. This can be done with artboard/
matting, or with spacers.

Hinging or Mounting

In conservation framing, the method of mounting or hinging is very important.
Hinging should be of acid-free materials and the method will vary depending
on the item being framed. Artworld of Sherway uses only acid-free rice paper
strips, corners or semi-adhesive strips or tape.

Mounting Board or Backing

The mounting board must be 100% acid-free for this is the backing that sits
under the piece being framed. Artworld of Sherway uses only 100% acid-free
foam core.
