Wei Yan was born in Beijing, China late 1960’s.

ARTIST'S STATEMENT

I have studied fine art since I was 6 years old. One of my very early artworks named "Galloping Horse", was given to French children from a youth delegation as a gift by Beijing Children’s Palace of China when I was studying there in 1979. I remember that my art instructor said my work was so mature and didn’t look like it was painted by a 10-year-old child. I dared to use lots of shadows to make the horse look lifelike.

Having completed my B.A. in fine art at the Beijing Capital Normal University, I am inspired by many of Europe’s old masters, especially Pierre-Auguste Renoir. His work captures the viewer’s eye with his unique style and passion.

I use intense colour, shape and shadows in my work, which blur the boundaries between reality and fantasy. I critique myself when working on a piece of my art. Shape, sharpness and blending are most important to me. When you view any of my artwork, you will notice I always blend the main subject’s edge into the background to bring the subject to life.

I use almost every medium. My skills, enable me to share my love of art with others. My art is my passion, an expression of my true feelings. Each and every piece has inspired me to create and in turn move those that view my art. My pursuit to create and develop my style is my life long journey as an artist.
