Serge Samus
(1982 - )

Serge was born in 1982 in Kiev, Ukraine and began studying art at nine years of age at the local art school.  At age eleven Serge won first prize in the Kiev City contest for best Caricature.  Serge and his family moved to Canada at age thirteen and he enrolled at the Etobicoke School of the Arts.  He studied there until graduation and participated in many student shows around Toronto.  He continued his education at York University in a Fine Arts program.  After one year he returned to the Ukraine to further his studies with local painters.  In 2001 he returned to Toronto to work part-time as a Picture-framing specialist and to devote time to his art.

Ever since Serge came to Canada, he was captured by the richness and abundance of the Canadian landscape that has been decimated by man in his native Ukraine.  He has traveled as far north as Hudson Bay, west to the Rockies and ventured into the Maritimes to produce numerous sketches, which he later refines in his studio.  His favorite spot however is Algonquin Park, majestic and mysterious land of wilderness.  He truly appreciates the Canadian wilderness and all it has to offer.

Serge's style is an unusual combination of techniques.  He strives to capture momentary atmospheric effects on nature in an impressionistic fashion using carefully laid down brushstrokes recalling those of Flemish painters.   Resulting detail and richness of tones is what brings his painting to life, capturing the mystery of fog, rain, and mist and its effect on the way we perceive nature.

"For me as an artist, it is much more enticing to work with several shades and tones of a single colour than with a limited pallet of clearly defined colors. Using one or two colours helps me to depict the inexplicable mystery that I perceive in nature."
