PAUL LETOURNEAU

Paul Letourneau

(1949 - )

Paul Létourneau was born in 1949, in Montreal, Quebec.  At the age of 11, Paul discovered the Charlevoix region on a photography trip with his father. It was only after several trips to this area and other places along the north shore of the Saint-Lawrence River, east of Québec City, that his interest in visual arts took its initial hold, first as a photographer, and then as a painter.

In 1985, Paul Létourneau started oil painting; he was extremely diligent in his efforts to learn this difficult craft, even above and beyond his professional obligations to his career. Paul quickly realized the potential of his oil paintings.   It is in Paul’s view that the three key elements of his works are: the composition of his subject, the quality of the drawing, and finally the mastering of the colour and light.

The majority of his subjects represent the Saint-Lawrence River, mainly focusing on the north shore, as well as Quebec City, and Montreal City street scenes. Paul prefers the subtleness of light that he achieves in his winter settings. He is an admirer of the work of Clarence A. Gagnon and James Morris. Paul is also very fond of the Dutch masters, especially Vermeer, and impressionists such as Sisley and Gauguin. As a self-taught artist, Paul believes his best education has been his continuous visits to museums.

Paul Létourneau is a graduate of McGill University (B.A.) and of University of Montreal (Law), and was appointed Queen’s Counsel in 1990. After a successful career spanning 25 years at Air Canada, he is now retired and dedicates his time to oil painting and photography. He is a member of the Board of Directors of the Musée de Charlevoix, located in Murray Bay, Quebec.

Létourneau had a photographic exhibition of his photos held at the Charlevoix Museum from May-July 2007.

As well, I participated in a landscape exhibition at Artworld of Sherway in June 2007.
